Breakout setup guide
How to trade a range breakdown on XAUUSD
Price grinds inside a defined range, then breaks the lower bound with conviction. Reads cleanly when the range is tight and the break is impulsive.

Quick takeaways
What this page covers
- 01Tight range with clear touches on both sides
- 02Close below the range low with momentum, or trade the retest
- 03Stop on the far side of the range or above the breakdown candle
- 04Filter for context — most range breaks fail on quiet days
What it is
A range breakdown is the moment a sideways consolidation resolves to the downside. The range may be a session range, a multi-day range, or a higher-timeframe structure. The setup is the break itself, and optionally a retest of the broken level.
The setup has a real edge only when the range is defined cleanly — multiple respected touches on both sides — and the breakdown comes on a closing candle with momentum, not a wick.
How to identify it
Range quality is the first filter.
- At least two clear touches on the upper and lower boundaries
- Range is tight relative to surrounding daily range
- Surrounding context suggests directional pressure (lower highs into the range top, for example)
- Breakdown candle closes beyond the lower boundary, not just wicks through
- Volume or momentum expands on the breakdown
Entry, stop, and target
Sell stop a few pips below the range low, or sell on the close of the breakdown candle. Retest entry waits for price to come back to the broken low from below and sells the rejection.
Stop goes above the range high, above the breakdown candle high, or at the range midpoint depending on aggression. Target is a measured move of the range projected down, or the next major support.
Why it fails
The setup is well known, which means it is gamed.
- Stop hunt below the range that reverses through the high — classic liquidity sweep
- Range was already a breakdown from a higher structure, and the move is exhausted
- Macro release during the breakdown reverses the move
- Trader enters every range break without context, hits chop on most of them
Practice it in Candlune
Pick stretches of XAUUSD history where a daily or 4-hour range visibly formed. Step through the resolution in replay and decide entry, stop and target in advance.
After a few dozen examples, tag each break as clean, sweep, or chop. The day-type pattern that emerges is more valuable than any breakout rule on its own.
